Today there are increasing quantities of professing Christians who are reluctant to claim the existence of a real God or Satan for fear of being spoofed and scorned. They fear the influence of scientists who declare that there is no proof that such entities exist. A supernatural God is deemed mythical by scientists because they cannot drag Him into a lab and inspect His being. Likewise, with all the modern portrayals of the devil there has been birthed into society a sense that he is a mythical creature. Of course, that is exactly how the devil would like to be presented, as mythical and therefore harmless. He can do his greatest work under this covering. However, Satan is not mythical and neither is God. This truth has to be factored into any solution that is applied to the problems of our society if there is to be any true success. To explain the existence of God or Satan, one has to explain the existence of the supernatural. Science opposed the idea of a supernatural realm because it cannot be proven to exist. I will attempt to point out that science claims the existence of other things and entities that cannot be proven to exist.

My initial reason for believing that there is a real God is because the Bible declares it. For the same reason I believe there is a real devil and that he is a clear and present danger. I recognize that this is not good enough for some people, so I will go on to extrapolate a bit. First of all, let’s take the indisputable fact that there is good and evil in the world. From where does this good or evil come? Science cannot adequately explain why some apparently normal and sane people can commit terrible acts of violence and evil. Science tries to pin the guilt on the genes, or in other words, all is physical. This might explain why some people are susceptible to one thing or another, but it doesn’t explain why many professing Christians made a complete and abrupt change in their life and personality after accepting Christ as Lord and Savior. We do not see such an event anywhere in the animal world. The physical brain can’t be coerced into this complete change against nature with the inducement of wonder drugs and other brain candy or even a lobotomy. However, this change that happens instantly with salvation is so complete that even the instinct to live is ignored to preserve the essence of it. This fact was poignantly enforced with the courageous decision of one young woman at the recent Columbine Massacre who confessed her belief in God though it cost her life.

Science does not recognize the existence of something called the soul or spirit. To many in the scientific and professional genre, even the term "mind" does not apply to an actual spiritual quality, but to the physical brain itself. However, none of these people can adequately explain what happens to the recognizable person inside when the body dies. If all is physical, the person inside ought to be detectable and his or her location identifiable after death. They know that the person was there, but they do not understand where they have gone after death. Likewise, if the mind were purely physical, then cloning an exact copy of man, the animal, would produce an exact personality. God has already done the cloning thing; it’s called twins. No matter how many sets of twins are studied, no two individuals are exactly alike in personality, although they may be close. Such philosophical conundrums are not meant to cloud the issue, but to demonstrate that there are some things that science doesn’t understand, yet acquiesce to the existence of.

If only a physical brain exists and there is no mind, no soul, and no spirit, then we should never be affected by sights and sounds to commit good or evil which are spiritual qualities. However, it is a fact that one can be won to Christ through the preaching of the gospel or witness of a Christian or one can be enticed to sin by the words and actions of the secular World System. There is a spiritual connection here in that the eyes see the motions and the ears hear the sounds that are transmitted to the brain and end up as an action in our life that has eternal consequences. Therefore, in this spiritual realm we call life, there is a vulnerability to being manipulated by spiritual causes that we term good or evil. Science would deny that there is a spiritual cause in life actions, but that people influence us. The questions are; if a person can be influenced to produce words or actions that in turn influence another person to commit good or evil, where does the initial influence come from? Does it come from humanity in another generation? How far back in time would we have to go to discover the origin of good and evil? Would we find one or the other of these two defining elements of life in the bit of slime that evolutionists declare was our earthly beginning? Would we have to go back to the Big Bang where evil was violently formed and intrinsically linked to whatever spawned life? If so, one would have to wonder why evil didn’t destroy life completely when it was mere bacteria or micro organic. It is not like evil to pass up such a chance to be consummately evil, so we have to conclude that good was also there along side of evil, opposing and restricting it.

Now today we have both good and evil that is at once recognized, yet their origin or essence cannot be adequately explained by science. But science would have us believe that there is no God or Satan. It would be truly amazing if science could discover the origin of good and evil. To ignore or deny the spiritual realm of humanity and existence is to deny the existence of space, which cannot be seen. That space exists is a fact; but what is it and how can we see or measure it? What holds our universe in place and what are all detectable things lodged in? We cannot measure space unless there is something in it, nor can we detect its being or origin. Thus, space is a vast nothing that is identifiable only by what it contains and the fact that it has the quality to contain. The supernatural is much the same in that it cannot be seen or measured, but its existence is identifiable by what it contains. It is a realm that transcends the physical that no physical instrument will touch or measure. In this spiritual dimension, the activities of God and Satan occur that are effected in the physical realm through the minds, souls or spirits of humanity. Occasionally, God performs a miracle, which is a direct intervention of His power into the physical realm. Science cannot explain that either. It’s too supernatural for the natural work of science.
